Duquette Johnston Review + Giveaway

duquette_title

I’ve not done a record review post in a loooong while. Having no time to sit and relax with an album is one thing, but also I like to wait for interesting and smaller release gems too. Not that I think I’m some record finding wizard – it’s just that with so many reviews out there, who needs to hear another person talking about some big budget crusher, right?

Anyway… My reviews are biased since I only talk about stuff I like, and I feel like a music review is more about finding leads than anything. I’m giving you a lead about this cool fellow named Duquette Johnston and you follow up by listening to some samples and deciding a coolness level for yourself.

Granted, I’ll be honest and say you should take my word without question… Rabbit Runs A Destiny is a standout record. Things start off with a cool, low driving track, Heart Is Breaking. It’s a great start as the album rolls into some heavier songs, like the title track and then meanders back to some slower, more deliberate songs. I typically like the sad stuff, and even though this isn’t a sad record, there’s some real solidly heavy ones… Cherry Blossoms is a favorite.

So another biased angle to this review is a bona fide give-away. I’m buying the record for you, but Duq was gracious enough to send a t-shirt to the winner too. Just comment with a hello or maybe a new album you like and I’ll choose a random number and count out the commenter. Be sure to include your email addr where necessary and I’ll contact you after the drawing end, on January 28th. Open to everyone, I’ll pick up the international shipping too. Good luck!

This is excellent! Thanks for the opportunity. Have you heard the most recent John Vanderslice LP, Dagger Beach? Really top notch stuff. His cover album of David Bowie’s Diamond Dogs is also incredible … very experimental, yet it totally holds together. Both are really nice quality vinyl pressings, too.

  2. Kenny says:

Thanks for posting this review. I had not heard of Duguette Johnston before and I am digging what I have listened to so far. Really love the wood & faulk website and your work! As far as new music that I am listening to

    Night Beds – Country Sleep
    Fallen Rivers – Amelioration

    Thanks
    Kenny

Hey! Looking forward to checking this album out. If you haven’t already heard it – The War On Drugs new song Red Eyes is fantastic. Not sure the new album name but their last release Slave Ambient was killer too. Have a great day!

  13. MikeF says:

Love this album and Duquette is a great guy. So much I like about this album. The writing, the “simple but right” production (very hard to do), his voice… One of my 2013 favorites. Did a nice interview with him too last year http://ourscatteredwords.com/2013/09/20/duquette-johnston-songwriting-interview/

  14. James says:

  27. corgimas says:

vinyl rocks……so nice to have around!!!! but i do not use it as much as i should!

  28. Would love to hear this album. When we moved from Southern Oregon to Portland last year we somehow managed to lose a few boxes along the way (or maybe they were accidentally donated to goodwill, shhh). With that my favorite Sam Cooke album Live at the Copa disappeared and I’ve been meaning to pick up another copy, its next on my list!

  29. Breanna says:

Such great music! And probably the coolest vinyl I have seen in a while.

  38. Helen says:

Beautiful vinyl giveaway you’re posting – thanks!

The album Dream Cave by Cloud Control has been in heavy rotation with me lately. Originally from Australia and now based in the UK, the four piece reportedly recorded this album in caves in the English countryside in order to achieve the desired acoustic.

  39. Bobby says:

Awesome opportunity, it’s such a joy discovering new music.

    Hey Matt

  52. Warren says:

Music has been a big part of my life since I was born. There are so many albums I have heard and enjoy. I wish I could have all the music I like on vinyl. I don’t know how many records I have but it’s a lot. If I had to pick one to play right now I would put on “the Doors.” I have a first pressing I bought in SoCal a long time ago.

  53. brandon says:

I would like this. pick me.

  54. This looks awesome! Hope to give it a listen at some point.

  58. Hoping to win, birthday is the day after the winner is announced.

  59. Nick Cochrane says:

I agree with some of the other posters, sounds like good stuff. I was looking for something new and a bit more organic that most of the over-processed hits out there so it looks like I may have found something that I was looking for.

The artwork and clear vinyl are quite nice also.

  60. Matt Pierce says:

Okey, winner drawn randomly… Congrats Steve Gray.

  61. Drew says:

This is a great giveaway and a cool way to promote a great artist. I agree with “Ten Stories” and “Shields” as some others have pointed out. I’d add Washed Out’s “Paracosm” and Willie Nelson’s “Stardust” (for the old school vibe).

  62. Kat says:

Thanks so much…I’m in need of a little musical inspirational, but sadly, I have none to give back right now.

  63. james says:
